臨床的重要性

• 脳神経外科手術における重要な解剖学的指標となる (Ribas, 2010)。
• 脳血管障害（特に中大脳動脈領域の梗塞や出血）の際、この部位の損傷は運動性失語を引き起こす可能性が高い (Dronkers et al., 2007)。
• てんかんの外科治療において、言語野の同定に重要な指標となる (Duffau, 2015)。

画像診断における意義

• MRIやCTでの言語野マッピングの際の重要な指標として用いられる (Yousry et al., 1997)。
• 腫瘍の術前計画において、手術アプローチの決定に重要な役割を果たす (Berger et al., 2011)。
• 機能的MRI（fMRI）での言語課題時の活性化部位との関連が深い (Amunts and Zilles, 2012)。

機能的特徴と病態

• 左半球優位の言語機能に関与し、特にブローカ野（44野、45野）の区分に重要 (Friederici, 2011)。
• この領域の血管支配は主に中大脳動脈のM2、M3セグメントによる (Ture et al., 2000)。
• 脳腫瘍や脳出血による圧迫で、進行性の失語症状を呈することがある (Anderson et al., 2008)。
